Oklahoma State class of 2021 recruiting update; commitment plans for two prospects and top schools

Nearly the entire cycle of the 2021 recruiting class has taken place during the NCAA in person recruiting ban due to COVID-19. 

That ban will now continue through the end of the calendar year, the NCAA announced today. This means recruits are not allowed to take visits, official or unofficial until Jan. 1 at the earliest. 

This also means you will not see any recruits at any division one football game this season. This is an unprecedented measure, as most of 2020 has been. 

The early signing period takes place in mid December, meaning all of those who sign to a school, would have never gotten the chance to take official visits. Some of those recruits may have never visited the school at all. 

This obviously affects Oklahoma State moving forward as there are several recruits who have the Cowboys high on their list but were looking to take their official first before making a decision. 

The recruiting staff will now have to find ways to persuade those prospects to commit/sign without ever seeing them face to face. 

The most notable recruits who are among that list are Jeffrey Bassa, a safety from Utah, CamRon Valdez, a running back from Texas, and CJ Baskerville, a safety also from Texas. 

The good thing is, all three of them have visited campus before on unofficial visits. They have all previously expressed wishes for an official visit, where you are able to get a more in depth and personal look into the depths of the program. 

One prospect who will have to make his decision without ever visiting campus is Pleasant Grove (TX) athlete, Nick Martin. 

Martin was just offered by the Cowboys a little over a week ago and is already considering Oklahoma State as one of his top schools. 

I spoke with Martin last night and he said he is planning on making his commitment sometime in November. He said he currently does not know where his commitment will be to but that he will definitely have it figured out in the next few weeks. 

I asked Martin what the appeal was with the Cowboys, especially with the offer being so late in the process. 

"I like how they have a family vibe going on," Martin said. "And how they care about their players and want to build them on and off the field."

Martin plays both running back and linebacker for Pleasant Grove but Oklahoma State would most likely keep him on the defensive side of the ball at this time. 

When it comes to the aforementioned Jeffrey Bassa, I also had a conversation with him today regarding the extended no visit rules. 

"I'll be committing sooner than i thought cause i’m planning on early enrolling.", Bassa said. 

Bassa recently just released a final three of Oklahoma State, Oregon, and Utah. I feel good about this recruitment with Bassa. 

The Cowboys have been in the game a long time with him and I believe will pull through in the end as well.
