Four-Star Cornerback Kobe Black Chooses Texas Over Oklahoma State And Others

What does this mean for Oklahoma State?

On Wednesday, four-star cornerback Kobe Black committed to the Texas Longhorns. He chose the Longhorns over Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Oregon, and LSU. Black is from Connally High School in Waco, Texas, and is rated as the #41 overall player in the nation (#3 Safety).

Black is a former teammate of Jelani McDonald, a freshman at Texas who was committed to Oklahoma State before announcing a flip at the All-American Bowl. While that may have been a factor in his decision, I still believe that Black would have been a Longhorn either way. He has a great relationship with the Texas staff, primarily cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph.

A big reason why Oklahoma State was able to get involved late was Kobe's brother Korie is currently on the roster as a defensive back in Stillwater. With the success late in the season, the Cowboys were able to make a push, even if they fell short in the conference championship game. There is a lot of promise for Poke fans heading into the new Big 12, and the pitch was being able to play with his brother on a team that is at or near the top of the conference.

Even though they fell short in this recruitment, there is still some hope to be had from a recruiting standpoint. The Cowboys had a chance to land a top-100 player, something they have not done since the 2021 cycle when they signed Kendal Daniels. This is a step in the right direction, and with the growing NIL fund, the Cowboys could continue to keep taking those steps and improving their ability to acquire the talent needed to sustain success at a high level.
