Last night, Mitch Canham's Oregon State Beavers baseball program earned their first shutout win of the season.

Tonight, the Beavers did it again, shutting out the Lamar Cardinals 8-0. The official scorecard can be viewed here. Our game recap is below.

Mirroring last night's victory, the orange & black scored in the top of the first inning. After leadoff man Easton Talt singled to left center, Adam Haight perfectly placed a double down the left field line, scoring Talt from first.

Two batters later, Buster Posey Award watchlist honoree Jacob Galloway brought Haight home from second with another knock through the left side. After Lamar went hitless in the bottom of the first, the inning ended with Oregon State ahead 2-0.

Oregon State doubled their lead in the top of the second inning. First, juco transfer Bryson Glassco reached on a fielding error by senior shortstop AJ Taylor. Glassco was soon followed by Cooper Vance, who moved Glassco to second and reached first on a fielder's choice. Then, an Adam Haight walk loaded the bases. That set up Bryce Hubbard, who delivered two runs home with a single through the left side.

Dax Whitney, perhaps the best pitcher in college baseball, lived up to the hype tonight. After surrendering his first hit allowed in the second inning, the sophomore from Idaho began to lock in. In the third, fifth, and sixth innings, Cardinals' batters went down in order.

Across six and two-thirds innings of action tonight, Oregon State's pitching ace threw 68 strikes on 100 pitches. Whitney earned ten strikeouts, five flyouts, and five groundouts. He only allowed four hits and two walks. Following a meeting at the mound with Beavers' pitching coach Rich Dorman in the bottom of the seventh inning, Whitney was relieved by sophomore righty Zach Edwards.

Building off of his earlier successes tonight, Oregon State's Bryce Hubbard tacked on another run in the top of the sixth inning, swinging a 355 foot shot past the fence in right field. That home run marked his sixth of the season.

Edwards got additional run support in the top of the ninth inning, swaying Oregon State's coaches into keeping the sophomore on the mound.

The Beavers' final blows began with a pair of walks for Hubbard and speedy centerfielder Nyan Hayes. A Lamar mound visit was fruitless, as reliever Colby Christian proceeded to hit seven-hitter Galloway on his next pitch. Christian was swiftly pulled in favor of Max Hartmann, who gave up a sacrifice fly to AJ Singer. Oregon State's next batter Paul Vasquez rolled a ground ball to second base; he was thrown out at first, but the hasty runner Hayes raced home from third. Later, Vance singled Galloway across home plate. When the frame ended, Oregon State led 8-0.

Edwards night finished after recording the final out. At the game's conclusion, he threw two and one-thirds innings with one hit, one walk, and three strikeouts. Oregon State's 23rd win of the season, credited to Whitney (his 5th win of the year), moved the Beavers' record to 23-6. They've now won two straight games, both shutouts, and will face Lamar again tomorrow morning at 11:05 AM PST.
