'20 Penn State Commit Tyler Warren (QB/ATH) Highlights and Evaluation
Just this week (happy 4th people!), Tyler Warren from Mechanicsville, Virginia (no I did not make that up), after rescinding his commitment to Virginia Tech, announced he would be a Nittany Lion in 2020. I was thrown off by his listed positions on some websites, and in general by how recruiters list these high schooler's positions. But on his hudl he's listed as a QB/free safety, and 247 tagged him with the ATH label too.
Do they list them under the position they currently play or the one they will play in college? Let me know in the comment section!
Tyler the quarterback has good touch, and trusts his reads. He consistently (on his highlight tape anyway) connects on routes over the middle, looking really composed in his pocket.
A concern of mine are his throwing mechanics. I don't see him stepping into many of his throws despite a clean pocket. Plenty of arm strength, and he uses it to throw on the move with accuracy. In terms of system fit, he looks like less of a passer and more of a distributor. Somebody who can move the pocket and deliver a consistent ball on time all over the field.
Penn State's offense isn’t exactly Urban Meyer’s Spread, but if Trace McSorley thrived, I could see the same happening for Warren. Warren is more of a power running style, which he will grow out of quickly in college.
I doubt he pans out as a free safety in college, I can't name any safeties taller than 6'3. He's an excellent basketball and baseball player as well. Great all-around athlete, so don't be surprised if he ends up being a pass catcher for PSU.
