Report: Jeff Capel Will Return as Pitt Head Coach

Pitt finished the 2021-2022 season with a 11-21 record.

Pitt men's basketball head coach Jeff Capel is set to return for his fifth season, according to CBS's Jon Rothstein.

Capel will enter his fifth year with the team with a 51-69 record, including a 21-53 mark against ACC opponents. This past season, the Panthers finished 11-21 and failed to commit a recruit from the upcoming class.

Capel's $15 million buyout likely played a significant role in the school's decision to retain him. His current contract runs through 2026-2027.

Capel stated after the Panthers' ACC Tournament loss to Boston College that the program has gotten better since his arrival, despite public opinion.

"Hell yeah, from when I found it," Capel said. "It was completely depleted when I got here. It was a mess. I didn’t know how bad it was. I don’t think the people inside the program knew how bad it was. I think where we are today, from the first day I took over, is significantly better. Now, is it improved the way I thought it would be after four years? No. Absolutely not. There is no one more frustrated than me with that, and I take responsibility for it, but it is certainly in a better place right now than it was when I first got here."
