Pitt's Jeff Capel Earns Career Milestone

Pitt Panthers head coach Jeff Capel reached a significant landmark in his career.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers' win over Wake Forest on Wednesday had a little extra meaning for Jeff Capel.

The victory marked Capel's 250th official win of his head coaching career, which has spanned three schools and 15 seasons. His first stop was at VCU from 2002 to 2006, where he spent four seasons leading the Rams to an overall record of 79-41 and an NCAA tournament appearance in 2004.

From there, Capel took the job at Oklahoma and was with the program from 2006 to 2011. During that time, he officially went 83-69 and led the Sooners to NCAA tournament berths in both 2008 and 2009, the latter of which resulted in a run to the Elite Eight.

Capel has accumulated a total of 263 wins in his career, but the 13 he recorded during his 2009-10 season with the Sooners were vacated by the NCAA due to program violations while on probation.

Capel went on to spend his eight seasons between head coaching gigs as an assistant coach at Duke, his alma mater, before landing at Pitt ahead of the 2018-19 campaign. Capel led the Panthers to the NCAA tournament last season and currently holds an 88-89 record with the program.
