South Carolina Edge coach Sterling Lucas has quickly developed a reputation as one of the best recruiters in the country in his short time in Columbia. In Lucas' first 16 months on the staff, he's landed freakazoid athlete Nyckoles Harbor, was the primary recruiter for Desmond Umeozulu, and has helped the Gamecocks land five other 4-star prospects combined in the 2023 and 2024 recruiting cycles.

While five-star edge defender Dylan Stewart is far and away the biggest name on the Gamecocks' entire 2024 recruiting board, one other name that hasn't been brought up as often is Darien Mayo, who plays for Good Counsel School in Olney, MD. To this point, Mayo has taken two visits to Columbia, with his latest one being for the Garnet and Black Spring game on April 15th.

It appears that these visits have left a strong impression on Darien, as he included the Gamecocks in his Top 6 released on Friday, alongside other teams like Michigan, Clemson, Ohio State, Maryland, and Southern Cal'. Each of those teams except for Maryland has an official visit scheduled with Mayo this Summer, meaning the Gamecocks will likely need to get him back on campus at some point if they wish to land the rising senior edge rusher.
