Stanford baseball coach David Esquer dives into the future of the program

The Stanford head coach is confident in the direction the program is heading

For the third year in a row Stanford saw their season end in Omaha, which while it's a good thing that they continuously make it there they are also at a turning point in the program.

Head coach David Esquer is well aware of how difficult it is to succeed at the college level, and is focusing on making sure that the program is able to continue their success. Something he recently discussed and was reported on by On3's Steve Samra. The head coach cited that the program will rely on a couple established guys to lead the way, but will also need new faces to step in right away.

“We’ve got some guys — we’ve had great luck of kids who maybe don’t play any role and then all of a sudden step up just by experiencing the program,” started the Cardinal skipper. “But obviously it’s going to start with Malcolm Moore and Braden Montgomery. Those two guys will be cornerstones of our team.

He also spoke highly of their incoming recruiting class and emphasized how good the pitchers are that will be joining the program next year.

“We’ve got a very nice recruiting class coming in with some really good arms. We’re going to have to maybe replace some of those home runs that we had this year,” added Esquer. “And we’ll see how the draft treats us. We expect that we could lose quite a few of our players. But I’m always hopeful that we create a program where if it’s not exactly right for them to leave it’s a win-win. They feel comfortable coming back. They’ll get better. They’ll get a year older. They’ll maybe make themselves even a better prospect."

The Cardinal are expected to see a handful of players drafted in the upcoming MLB Draft, but there's always a possibility that someone returns to the Farm like Quinn Mathews did a year ago. Needless to say there is a ton to look forward to if you are a Stanford fan.
