Syracuse Dominates Johns Hopkins to Advance in NCAA Tournament

The Orange cruised past the Blue Jays to keep its season alive.

It’s official: the Orange are moving on. Syracuse blew out Johns Hopkins 25-8 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to keep their championship campaign alive.

While the entire team was on point today, it was the Tyrrell sisters that led the way. Emma set a career high with seven goals and one assist, and Meaghan scored six goals with three assists for a total of nine points.

Head coach Kayla Treanor was impressed with their effort, but praised the whole team for their dominant performance.

“The offense was outstanding today, shooting 25 for 36, especially Meaghan and Emma,” Treanor said. “I thought they were just spectacular today and so fun to watch.”

The Tyrrell sisters remained as humble as ever, crediting their team for their success.

“I was just out there having a great time,” Emma Tyrrell said of her career day. “Enjoying the energy, and playing team ball.”

Notably, Meaghan Tyrrell is just one of two players in program history to record 100 or more points in three different seasons. Last week, she was named a finalist for the prestigious Tewaaraton Award, one of just five nationwide. The award is given to the country’s best college lacrosse player.

For Meaghan, the honor is a testament to the talent of her teammates.

“All those points, they don’t come without my teammates,” Meaghan Tyrrell said. “Making sure we can keep putting up numbers like that between our whole offense will be huge.”

Behind the Tyrrell sisters was Megan Carney, who had three goals and two assists. Natalie Smith also recorded a hat trick, scoring four goals for one of her best performances of the season. Maddy Baxter recorded two goals, too.

The Orange defense was outstanding, holding the #19 team in the nation to just eight goals. Delaney Sweitzer, who played the majority of minutes in net, recorded 11 saves, continuing her pattern of dominance. Tate Paulson entered the game late, as Treanor pulled the starters in the final minutes, and recorded a save, prompting cheers from her teammates on the sidelines.

“She just was seeing the ball really well,” Treanor said of Sweitzer’s play. “Hopkins is a really good team, really well-balanced offense. I thought [the defense] did a nice job.”

For Johns Hopkins, the offense was run primarily by Bailey Cheetham, who had two goals and two assists. Behind Cheetham, Ashley Mackin picked up two goals and an assist, and Ava Angello scored twice.

In a particularly wholesome moment, Payton Rowley, a player that’s seen very few minutes of action this season, scored with just 10 seconds left in the game off an assist from Ryann Banks. As expected, the Syracuse sideline erupted.

With the win, Syracuse improves to 17-2 on the season and will advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. They will take on James Madison, the 7-seed. The Dukes beat Drexel and Maryland, respectively, to advance to the quarterfinals.

The game will be played on Thursday in the JMA Wireless Dome, where Syracuse played all but one regular season game. A game time has yet to be announced.
