Syracuse Women's Lacrosse Wins at Duke to Improve to 9-0

The Orange extended its best start in program history.

In a warmer climate down south, the Orange offense heated up and shut down the Duke Blue Devils, walking away with a 16-10 victory. The east-coast road trip for Syracuse was a massive success, as the Orange went 2-0 against their ranked opponents away from the Dome.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair with both teams trading goals, keeping things interesting for the first 30 minutes. Both defenses traded turnovers and saves, but the Orange quickly broke free with seven straight goals in the third period, scoring more in 15 minutes than Duke had scored all game. By the time Duke strung together a response, it was too little too late, and the Orange walked away with yet another win on their growing resume.

Spearheaded by Megan Carney, her five-goal showing now puts her at 34 goals on the year, her second highest all time goal total in a single season. Emma Tyrell and Emma Ward both recorded hat tricks and each also notched two assists for the day. The threats were too much for the Duke defense, who shuffled three goalkeepers in their rotation to try and regain traction on defense.

The Syracuse defense by contrast was as strong as ever, causing eight turnovers winning 12 ground balls to keep possession for the Orange. Though the Blue Devils won most of the draw controls, winning 17 of 29, the Orange were able to get the ball back or stop Duke’s momentum.

Duke’s Katie DeSimone and Caroline DeBellis were solid most of the game, but despite Duke’s six free position shots and some great performances from the top performers, the Blue Devils couldn’t get things going in the second half. Their chance to right the ship is falling out of reach quicker than expected.

Syracuse improves to an impressive 9-0, surpassing their three-day record for the longest undefeated start to a season. They welcome #5 Stony Brook to the JMA Dome on Wednesday, March 22 for what should be an incredible matchup. Duke falls to 4-5 and goes below 500 for the first time all year, losing their fourth straight game. They prepare to travel to Greenville to face East Carolina on Wednesday.
