Dominant Third Quarter Paces Syracuse Lacrosse's Win Over #2 Johns Hopkins

The Orange picks up the biggest win of the Gary Gait era.

Syracuse men's lacrosse picked up its biggest win of the season and of Gary Gait's head coaching tenure with a 14-13 victory against #2 Johns Hopkins. The game was played at a neutral site in Charlotte (NC). With the win, Syracuse improved to 6-2 on the season. Next up is a matchup with Delaware on Saturday, March 16th. That game starts at 2:00 p.m. Eastern.

Joey Spallina led the Orange with six points on two goals and four assists. Owen Hiltz added five on two goals and three assists. Christian Mule and Jake Stevens each had hat tricks. Goalie Will Mark had 11 saves on the night.

Syracuse started the game strong with three of the games first four games. The Blue Jays would respond though with three straight goals and shutting the Orange out in the second quarter to take a 4-3 lead into halftime.

That is when Syracuse would take control. The Orange would score five of the next six goals as part of an eight goal flurry in the third quarter to take an 11-8 advantage into the final frame. The two rivals would trade goals until the 9:46 mark and then the defenses would step up.

Neither team would score for six minutes until Johns Hopkins would find the back of the net twice in 75 seconds to trim the lead to one. Mason Kohn would then win the biggest faceoff of the season to give Syracuse possession.

The Orange would run the clock down to 15 seconds remaining and take a shot clock violation. Syracuse forced a turnover on the Blue Jays clear attempt to seal the victory.
