Matthew Stenbroten Breaks Down Syracuse Commitment

The class of 2024 linebacker details why he picked the Orange.

Class of 2024 Lake Mills (WI) High linebacker Matthew Stenbroten committed to Syracuse on Saturday to kick off the month of July on a high note for the Orange.

"I committed to Syracuse because I felt it was too good of an opportunity for me to pass up," Stenbroten said. "I think the combination of both the level of football and the position they were recruiting me at made it the best fit for me to succeed at the next level."

During the recruiting process, the 6-4, 225 pound linebacker took a close look at all of his options. When he finished his evaluation process, he was left with only one conclusion.

"I knew Syracuse was the spot for me when I was narrowing down my top schools and writing down pros and cons," Stenbroten said. "My family was fully supportive of my decision and they thought Syracuse would be a great fit for me. I also felt if I didn’t take this opportunity presented to me, I would regret it."

Stenbroten plays multiple positions in high school, but will be focused on one at the collegiate level.

"I fit into the outside linebacker position of the 3-3-5 defense," Stenbroten said. "At the OLB position, I will be a coverage guy/run filler."

Stenbroten developed a strong relationship with Syracuse assistant Mike Lynch, his primary recruiter. That extended to the rest of the staff during his official visit.

"I only really had a relationship with Coach Lynch before my official visit," Stenbroten said. "He came and visited my school multiple times in the winter and spring. While on my official visit I built a lot of relationships with the staff. Relationships are huge in college football, because it will be the men coaching you for the next four to five years. I think I got a good grasp of what type of coaches and what type of people they are on my official visit."

During the visit, Stenbroten received valuable information from current Orange players that helped him make his decision.

"My player host Derek McDonald and one of his teammates Justin Barron told me that playing in the Dome is awesome," Stenbroten said. "It’s everything they thought it was when they committed. They told me that facilities and a great coaching staff is huge in making a decision but if you can’t see yourself living and playing at Syracuse then this place isn’t for you. All what was said factored into me making my commitment."
