Monday Musings: What's Left for Syracuse Football Recruiting in 2024?

In this story:

After a busy June, things have slowed down quite a bit to start July in the world of Syracuse football recruiting. There is currently a dead period that extends through July 24th. With 16 players currently committed, what is left for the Orange this cycle?

1. QUARTERBACK

Syracuse already has one quarterback committed in four star Jakhari Williams. However, the Orange was looking to bring in two this cycle. Brendan Zurbrugg was once committed for about eight days before flipping to Northwestern. With the hazing scandal at Northwestern along with the status of head coach Pat Fitzergald up in the air, could Syracuse revisit that situation? Potentially, but it would require some in depth conversations and Syracuse feeling like another flip would not happen. That said, Syracuse will continue to evaluate quarterbacks this fall to see if someone emerges during their senior season. If no one does, Syracuse will hold on to that scholarship and use it in the portal.

2. WIDE RECEIVER

Ta'Ron Haile is committed, but Syracuse wants to add more this cycle. At least another one if not two. This is a position to watch moving forward, and just like quarterbacks, Syracuse will evaluate those who emerge this fall. Ideally, the Orange would find an outside receiver and a slot to wrap up the class.

3. DEFENSIVE BACK

Syracuse has three defensive backs committed this cycle so far but wants to add at least one more. The top target is clearly Willy Love. Things are progressing on that front as Love and coach Perkins work on their relationship. Expect Love to visit Syracuse this fall. There are no other names at this juncture.

4. TOTAL SLOTS AVAILABLE

Based strictly on numbers in terms of whose eligibility is exhausted after the 2023 season, it looks like Syracuse would only take around 10 players this cycle. Yet because of the transfer portal, they can take more as there will be attrition each offseason. Hence why the class is currently at 16 and the Orange is looking for more. I would anticipate only a handful of slots left at most.
