Syracuse football heavily pursued Philadelphia (PA) offensive lineman Naquil Betrand in the class of 2023. When the Orange initially offered, he was pledged to Colorado. He subsequently took an official visit, along with officials to Kentucky and Auburn. Syracuse seemed to be in a good spot before Texas A&M ramped up its interest. The Aggies hosted him for an unofficial before landing a commitment, which was solidified with an official visit despite Syracuse's attempt to flip him.
Now, Betrand has tweeted that he will no longer be enrolling in Texas A&M and instead will Jireh Prep School in North Carolina. That comes with reclassifying to 2024. Should the Orange pursue?
I say yes. It makes complete sense. Whether or not the interest is reciprocated is the biggest question. Syracuse currently has two offensive linemen committed in the class of 2024 in Noah Rosahac and Willie Goodacre. The Orange has also missed on targets such as Jack Small (Duke) and Austin Leibfried (Indiana). Both were supposed to take official visits but cancelled. Betrand could be a perfect replacement.
Betrand is extremely talented, has tremendous upside and felt very comfortable at Syracuse during his official visit. He liked the program, the culture and the players. The only issue is that Mike Schmidt was the offensive line coach when Syracuse recruited him previously. Will Steve Farmer have as much interest? That is another variable in all of this.
Either way, he is one to monitor for now.

EXPERIENCE Mike McAllister has been covering Syracuse basketball, football and recruiting for more than a decade. Mike's career started with his own free blog as a way to vent following sporting events. Shortly thereafter, a network of basketball sites called Coast 2 Coast Hoops asked him to run their Syracuse site. That site was called Nation of Orange, and Mike quickly established it as a go-to for Syracuse fans. After running Nation of Orange for several months, a position with the Syracuse site on the Scout network became available. After one year as the recruiting expert with Cuse Nation, he was named the publisher. Mike oversaw the transition from Scout to 247Sports, and ran the site on that network for years. Presented with the opportunity to join one of the biggest names in the sports journalism industry, Sports Illustrated, Mike jumped at the chance. All Syracuse was started from scratch by Mike and the Fan Nation team. It has now become a staple for Orange fans of various sports. Mike has broken news on recruiting, Syracuse basketball and football team information and has established himself as the top recruiting inside in the market. He has appeared on local radio shows, television broadcasts, national radio shows and much more.
