Syracuse football picked up a commitment from Buffalo (NY) Bennett wide receiver Ja'Meer Thomas last week. What does this mean for the Orange's 2024 recruiting class?
The first part is simple. Syracuse has been looking for a playmaking slot receiver in this class. The Orange has Ta'Ron Haile committed, but view him as someone who is more likely to stick on the outside. Syracuse also previously had a verbal from local standout Syair Torrence, but he decommitted and flipped to Michigan State. Torrence has the ability to play in the slot, but was recruited as someone who could move all over the formation. Thomas is a bit different.
With Thomas' 4.4 speed, suddenness in his change of direction, quickness in his cuts and elusiveness in the open field, he is viewed as a dynamic playmaker who will be listed as a slot. However, he could also line up in the backfield at times, return kicks and allow the Syracuse offense to be creative with how he is used. His addition to the Orange's 2024 class means Syracuse does not need to force adding another wide receiver.
That said, Syracuse is back involved with Torrence with all of the drama surrounding the Michigan State football program. Adding Torrence to Haile and Thomas would be a home run wide receiver haul. Expect Syracuse to try to get Torrence back on campus for a game this season and/or a more formal visit after his season is over.
The addition of Thomas also speaks to Syracuse's in-state recruiting. Syracuse does not just grab New York players just to check a box. Rather, Syracuse is more picky about who it pursues in-state and only offers those it thinks have the ability to become starters. The offer to Thomas means Syracuse thinks he is an offensive weapon they cannot pass on and will impact the team once he arrives.
Similar to Syracuse pursuing other under the radar players in Upstate New York in recent cycles, including Rashard Perry, David Clement, Kevin Jobity and Joe Cruz.

EXPERIENCE Mike McAllister has been covering Syracuse basketball, football and recruiting for more than a decade. Mike's career started with his own free blog as a way to vent following sporting events. Shortly thereafter, a network of basketball sites called Coast 2 Coast Hoops asked him to run their Syracuse site. That site was called Nation of Orange, and Mike quickly established it as a go-to for Syracuse fans. After running Nation of Orange for several months, a position with the Syracuse site on the Scout network became available. After one year as the recruiting expert with Cuse Nation, he was named the publisher. Mike oversaw the transition from Scout to 247Sports, and ran the site on that network for years. Presented with the opportunity to join one of the biggest names in the sports journalism industry, Sports Illustrated, Mike jumped at the chance. All Syracuse was started from scratch by Mike and the Fan Nation team. It has now become a staple for Orange fans of various sports.
