Syracuse Men's Soccer Slips & Slides to Draw With Clemson on Rainy Afternoon

The Orange scored late to tie the Tigers.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sunday afternoon Syracuse Men’s Soccer earned a 1-1 draw with the #21 nationally ranked Clemson Tigers in a cold and rainy battle. When asked about the conditions after the game, coach McIntyre joked “Look, most teams wet the field before games, Y’know, we do it naturally in upstate New York.”

In a game with a total of 5 shots on goal (3 for the Tigers, 2 for the Orange), defense reigned supreme. Syracuse has generally been in a lot of defensive battles this season, but this was another level of offensive struggle for both squads for much of this game.

The game went to half tied at zero apiece, and it seemed as if this was going to be a “first goal wins” type of game, if any goals were to be had at all. Then, in the 51st minute, Clemson defender Arthur Duquenne put one in the back of the net to give his squad a 1-0 lead.

Syracuse finally had a shot to tie it in minute 77 after a penalty just outside the box set up a free kick chance for defender Buster Sjoberg. Sjoberg came through huge, notching the tying goal in the top left corner. After the game, he said “I practiced a couple days ago, so it’s (the) same routine, five steps back, take a deep breath and score…”

From here, things turned into a track meet, with both teams exchanging long runs up and down the pitch. Although there were some close calls, neither group could tally the winner, as the contest would end in a 1-1 draw.

The Tigers are next in action this Friday, October 20 at 6 p.m. at home vs Boston College.

The Orange stay at home as well, as they welcome Yale to SU Soccer Stadium in what coach McIntyre described as the biggest game of the Orange’s season. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
