Aggies Head Coach Buzz Williams Receives Contract Extension Through 2028
Texas A&M Aggies men's basketball head coach Buzz Williams has turned around the program for the better, and he got rewarded for his efforts on Friday, as the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents approved a contract extension for Williams through the 2028 season, according to a release.
In the past two seasons, Williams has led the Aggies to back-to-back Southeastern Conference tournament championship appearances for the first time since they joined the conference for the 2012-13 season. His 52 wins are the most in a two-year span in Texas A&M history, as his 27 wins in 2021-22 were one victory shy of tying the single-season program record.
Williams said in a statement that he is grateful for the "belief and support in our program.
"Our family loves the Bryan-College Station community and Aggieland, and we're grateful for the support of the 12th Man," Williams said. "We're proud of what our teams have accomplished, which is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our players and staff. We are excited about the future of Texas A&M Basketball and humbled for the opportunity to be a part of it."
Williams got it done on the recruiting trail as well, bringing in top-30 classes in the 2020 and 2021 cycles. After back-to-back years outside the top 50, Williams has helped build what is currently the No. 4 class in the 2024 recruiting cycle.
Aggies athletics director Ross Bjork praised Williams' leadership, calling him a "role model" and "a great example of Texas A&M's core values."
"He's taken our men's basketball team to new heights over the past two seasons with even brighter days ahead," Bjork said in a statement. "It was an easy decision to ensure that Buzz is here in Aggieland for many years to come as we continue our mission of creating opportunities through championship athletics."
