Texas A&M Aggies LB Edgerrin Cooper Named To The Sporting News All-America Second Team

Cooper still has a chance to earn consenus All-American honors before departing for the NFL.

Edgerrin Cooper is inching closer to earning consensus All-American status, but he'll have to wait a little longer to find out his status.

The Texas A&M linebacker was named to The Sporting News second All-America list, the media outlet announced Wednesday.

The awards keep coming for Cooper, who declared for the 2024 NFL Draft on Tuesday afternoon. Prior to being named to the SN All-America list, Cooper was also named to the first-team Walter Camp Foundation and the Associated Press All-American rosters.

To earn consensus All-American honors, one must be named to the first team for three of the five recognized All-American lists. These include The Sporting News, Walter Camp Foundation, AP, American Football Coaches Association and Football Writers Association of America.

The American Football Coaches Association has yet to release its first and second-team list as of this time. Cooper was named to the second-team roster among the FWAA All-America list.

A native of Covington, La., Cooper dominated during his final season on campus, totaling team highs in tackles (84), tackles for loss (17) and sacks (eight). His 17 tackles for loss ranked fourth among Power 5 players and ninth overall.

Cooper is expected to be a highly sought-after prospect in April's draft. Most analysts believe the 6-3 linebacker will be a top-50 selection, with several mock drafts featuring him as a first-round talent.

During his four seasons in College Station, Cooper was consistent. For his A&M career, Cooper recorded 204 tackles, 30.5 tackles for a loss, 8.5 sacks, two interceptions, 10 passes breakups, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

The Aggies will close out the 2023 season against No. 20 Oklahoma State in the TaxAct Texas Bowl at NRG Stadium in Houston on Dec. 27 at 8 p.m. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN.

Cooper announced Tuesday he would not play in the bowl game to begin preparation for the draft. Receiver Ainias Smith, defensive lineman McKinnley Jackson and offensive lineman Layden Robinson also announced they would enter the draft despite having one more year of eligibility.
