Aggies QB Kellen Mond Waived By Cleveland Browns Prior To Cutdown Day

Kellen Mond is on the move again following a one-year stay with the Cleveland Browns.

Texas A&M Aggies quarterback Kellen Mond will be looking for a new place to play in the NFL this season.

Mond was waived by the Cleveland Browns prior to their preseason finale matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday, the team announced Thursday. Mond had been competing for the backup job with former UCLA starter Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Tennessee standout Joshua Dobbs.

In three preseason appearances, Mond threw for 235 yards and three touchdowns against one interception. He started against the New York Jets in the Hall of Fame Game earlier this month but was later replaced by Dobbs and Thompson-Robinson as the No. 2 option in games against the Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles.

A 2021 third-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings, Mond joined Cleveland after being waived at the end of training camp last season. He played in one game as a Viking but did not see any regular-season action with the Browns.

A four-year starter for the Aggies, Mond split reps with Nick Starkel in 2017 before being named the full-time starter under Jimbo Fisher in 2018. In 46 games, the San Antonio native threw for 9,661 yards and 71 touchdowns against 27 interceptions while rushing for 1,608 yards and 22 scores.

In 2020, Mond quarterbacked A&M to the first nine-win season in the Fisher era, capped off with an Orange Bowl victory over North Carolina. He finished his time in College Station as the Aggies' all-time passing leader in yards and touchdowns.

The Aggies open the season at Kyle Field on Sept. 2 against New Mexico.
