Texas A&M Focused On 'Little Things' In Offseason To Improve 'Execution' In 2023

The Texas A&M Aggies were 2-5 in one-score games last season, which was the difference in a bowl game appearance and the program's first losing season in 13 years.

The Texas A&M Aggies began fall practice Wednesday with 31 days to prepare for New Mexico.

Head coach Jimbo Fisher's first media availability ahead of fall camp featured some of his patented good-natured ribbing with the media, but once he dove into his responses, it was all business. He seemed to be in good spirits for the head coach of a team that had a losing season for the first time since 2009.

However, he reiterated that the Aggies were purposeful in their training in the offseason to correct the wrongs from 2022.

“I think we made tremendous progress in doing the little things and paying attention to them," Fisher said. "We’ll see once we get to the practice fields, and at the end of the day, that’s what it all comes down to.”

The Aggies return quarterback Conner Weigman and a quartet of pass-catchers to help him operate, looking to overcompensate for the void in production that running back De'Von Achane's NFL departure has left.

Texas A&M's scoring defense was the fourth-best in the Southeastern Conference last season with six of its top-seven tacklers from a year ago returning in 2023.

The Aggies had all the pieces last season, but whether it was not performing in the moment or a coaching deficiency, they couldn't find the inches, as Fisher would say.

While Texas A&M won two games by a score or less, it also lost five games by less than one score, including a 17-14 home loss to Appalachian State.

Fisher said there's "one thing" that determines the outcome of a football game.

“It’s about execution. Everything comes to a point," Fisher said. "You don’t practice things until you do them right. You practice until you can’t do them wrong, and they become habits.”
