Former Aggies Offensive Lineman Jake Matthews Named To 2023 Hall Of Fame Class

In this story:
Former Texas A&M offensive lineman Jake Matthews was a staple for the Aggies' trenches during his time in College Station. Now, he's being honored for his impact on the program.
Matthews was one of eight former athletes to be named a member of the Texas A&M Lettermen's Association's 2023 Athletics Hall of Fame Class.
"Every year, it is an honor to recognize and celebrate the excellence of our newest hall of famers," A&M Athletic Director Ross Bjork said in a statement. "They personify our mission to create opportunities through championship athletics and their legends will now be cemented in Texas A&M history. This group made their mark on Aggieland during their time here, but they have continued to inspire and represent Texas A&M in their professional careers as well."
The son of Hall of Fame offensive tackle Bruce Matthews, Jake Matthews became one of the top linemen to grace Kyle Field in the 2010s. A four-year starter, Jake Matthews was a two-time first-team All-American and a finalist for the Outland Trophy during his senior year.
He started 46 consecutive games, working his way from right tackle to left tackle following the departure of Luke Jockel in 2012.
The 2013 season marked a record-setting year for the Aggies' offense, primarily due to the success in the trenches. In his first — and only season — at left tackle, Matthews helped A&M become one of three FBS to finish top-10 in scoring, passing and total offense nationally.
Matthews also helped the Aggies flourish in their first season as members of the SEC and was a stalwart in blocking for Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel who became the first freshman to win the award. That season, A&M became the first SEC program to finish with over 7,000 yards of total offense (7,261 yards) in a single season.
During the 2012 campaign, A&M broke school records for passing (316.5 yards per game), scoring (44.5 points per game) and total offense (558.5 yards per game). Matthews guided A&M to a 36-16 overall record for his career, including its first 11-win season since 1998.
Drafted No. 6 overall by the Atlanta Falcons in 2014, Matthews has carried over the same mentality to the pros. He currently has the longest starting streak among offensive linemen, with 145 consecutive games played.
Bruce Matthews, a seven-time first-team All-Pro selection, holds the record for most career starts for an offensive lineman with one team in NFL history with 293 games as a member of the Houston Oilers.
All inductees will be honored at the 45th Burgess Banquet on Friday, September 15, prior to A&M's Week 3 matchup against Louisiana-Monroe.
