Fisher's Seat Gone Cold? Aggies, Jimbo Could Bounce Back This Season, Says CBS

Last season didn't go the way that the Aggies would have liked, but with an offense of returning players, a successful bounce back could prove that the 2022 season was nothing more than a fluke.

In this story:

Ever since the Texas A&M Aggies' disappointing end to last season, rumors surrounding coach Jimbo Fisher have been flying.

Whether they've been surrounding his contract length, his current situation as coach or even if a buyout should be in order, there isn't any denying that something wasn't clicking for Texas A&M last season.

Fisher's already discussed what he believed was the main issue, citing a lack of attention to detail as one of the biggest factors of the Aggies' lack of success.

"Last season, we just didn’t find the inches," Fisher said at Texas A&M's SEC media day. "There were five games where we came up one play short. We didn’t find the inches in critical moments. We have to do a better job of getting our players to do it. I believe we will. I like our team going forward.”

But while Fisher's comments didn't go a long way with some of the media, who have already condemned him as the coach of the Aggies, CBS Sports took another route regarding the future of Fisher and Texas A&M.

"Signs seem to be pointing toward 2022 being a blip," the site wrote. "The Aggies return 10 starters each on offense and defense this fall, including quarterback Conner Weigman, who threw for 896 yards and eight touchdowns with zero interceptions while starting the last four games of last season."

Yes, Fisher and company will be put to the test against their annual tougher opponents in the SEC West, but with an offense that isn't so new anymore, Weigman seems poised for a big year.

"If TAMU can rebound and contend inside the SEC West this season, Fisher's seat will rightfully cool down," the site continued. "When the Aggies face Alabama at home on Oct. 7, we'll see if they have what it takes to get back into the playoff conversation."

Playoffs is certainly where the Aggies hope to be. It may not happen this season — there are still a lot of unknowns, after all — but when the CFP expands in 2024, it will only get easier as Texas A&M looks to get better.

And if they do, Fisher will undoubtedly be in it for the long run in College Station.
