Texas A&M Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher has been adamant that offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino was hired for a reason: to call plays.

With the play-calling responsibility off of his plate, that allows him to have more oversight of the Aggies' program, which Fisher has compared to being like running a company. Fisher said Monday that he's been able to give attention to all three phases, recruiting and even keep a better relationship with donors, among other things, now that he's given Petrino play-calling duties.

"Just spending more time on certain things that you're back and forth on and a lot of times," Fisher said. "The decisions you make, maybe even I'd say defensively, special teams-wise, even being able to spend more time in those areas."

That doesn't necessarily mean Fisher's taken a completely hands-off approach with the offense and given Petrino 100 percent of the stake.

"Then, also frees you up at times to even expand on offensive stuff where that room's there," Fisher said. "You're expanding on some other opponents inside or other ideas that are going on in football that they're having a game plan on and do things."

Fisher said times are changing with year-round recruiting that speaking at booster and donor events are generally things of the past. He said by delegating more, he's been able to get out to more events.

As Fisher enters his sixth season at the helm, he's shedded his old micromanaging habits and has began divvying up more tasks for others to handle.

"You have a lot more people that can diversify and do, what I call, exploratory exercises of finding information about different things you want to do in all three phases of what you're trying to do," You still have these other sides all saying what you're still involved in, but at the same time, it can be turned over. So I mean there's diversity of where you're at and your time and all those areas, too.

And Fisher's open-minded, hands-slightly-off approach this season just might pay off for the Aggies. It has for Kirby Smart.
