Despite a quiet day at the plate, the TCU Horned Frogs found a way to defeat the visiting Houston Cougars and clinch a much-needed series sweep.

The Frogs jumped out to an early lead in the 2nd inning courtesy of a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Fisher Ingersoll that scored Anthony Silva. An inning later, Kurtis Byrne doubled the advantage with an RBI groundout.

Kole Klecker, who has struggled in his recent starts, settled down after what was an intense 28-pitch 1st inning. He retired eight consecutive Cougars batters before running into trouble in the 5th.

After allowing the first two batters to reach base via a hit by pitch and a single, Jonathan French put the Cougars on the board with an RBI double. Two batters later, Jacob Schoenvogel launched the Cougars into the lead with a two-run single.

The Cougars tacked on another in the 6th following a throwing error by Micah Kendrick.

As the Cougars found their way into Saturday’s game, Jaxon Jelkin settled down on the mound and found his groove, retiring 13 straight TCU batters between the 3rd and the 7th inning.

But in the 7th, the Frogs found some life and knocked in four runs on one hit. The rally began with a one out single from Karson Bowen, who advanced to second base on a wild pitch from reliever Chris Stuart.

Jack Baseer, pinch hitting for Ingersoll, walked before Camden Sos reached on a fielder’s choice that saw Bowen score on a throwing error by the left-hander Stuart. Sos grounded a chopper back to the pitcher, who turned to throw it to second but yanked it into the ground and into the outfield.

Following a second wild pitch from Stuart, runners advanced to second and third. After yet another wild pitch, this time from Justin Murray, Basseer scored the tying run.

With the batting order flipped, Chase Brunson plated Sos as the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to right field. Now ahead 5-4, Logan Maxwell reached on a fielding error by the first baseman that saw Ryder Robinson score from second base.

Perhaps one of the strangest and wildest innings to date, the Frogs put up four runs on just one hit in the 7th. With the help of two errors and three wild pitches, TCU found a way back into a game they had no business being in.

Kirk Saarloos turned the duties over to Ben Abeldt and Zachary Cawyer to finish off the game as the Frogs saw out their 6-4 lead.

Despite just having two hits on Saturday the Frogs secured their first conference sweep with some help from the Cougars. TCU now improved to 20-7 on the season and 5-7 in the Big 12.

They will hit the road for a midweek matchup with the UT Arlington Mavericks before heading out to Cincinnati to take on the Bearcats next weekend.
