Reports: 14-Team CFP Could Be In Play

The Tennessee Volunteers and the rest of the college football world got significant news on the College Football Playoff on Wednesday.

The Tennessee Volunteers carry high internal expectations for what they believe they could be next season, but it appears the national media doesn't see it that way. ESPN banded together to create a comprehensive early preview of what the 2024 College Football Playoff could look like. 2024 will be the first season of the expanded 12-team playoff, an uptick from the previous four-team playoff

However, in the near future, the 12-team field could expand even more. There's been a lot of discussions about what the future of the sport could look like, especially in postseason play. ESPN senior college football writer Pete Thamel confirmed that there have been internal discussions about adding two more teams to the field. While that may seem unrealistic now, we were saying that about the 12-team playoff a few years ago, and we are now entering a new era of college football.

"The idea of a 14-team College Football Playoff was discussed by the CFP management committee at meetings in the Dallas area today. If that happened, it would begin in 2026. Nothing is imminent, but it’s significant this idea was discussed." - ESPN's Pete Thamel
