Grant Williams Lands with Dallas Mavericks in Three-Team Trade

Former Tennessee Volunteers forward Grant Williams lands with the Dallas Mavericks in NBA free agency following a blockbuster trade.

On Wednesday, Grant Williams, a former Tennessee Volunteer, was the centerpiece in a three-team deal that moved him from the Boston Celtics. The deal also includes the San Antonio Spurs, per ESPN analyst Adrian Wojnarowski

Williams landed in Dallas from Boston in a 4-year, $53 million sign-and-trade deal. Boston receives three second-round picks (2024, 2025, and 2028), while the Spurs get former Maverick forward Reggie Bullock and an unprotected pick swap with Dallas in 2030. Williams spent three seasons in Knoxville from 2016-2019. He brought home many accolades as a Vol, including an SEC regular season title during the 2017-18 season. He also was an All-American and a two-time SEC player of the year.

Following his career on Rocky Top, Williams declared for the 2019 NBA Draft and went in the 1st round at 22nd overall to the Boston Celtics. He was one of three Vol players to go in that draft, as his teammates Admiral Schofield and Jordan Bone would get picked in the second round. Williams averaged 6.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game in his four-year career with Boston. He had his best season averages in all those categories during the 2022-23 season. He started in 58 of the 288 games he played with the Celtics. He also had a field goal percentage of 45% and shot 38% from three throughout those four seasons.

Boston also made the playoffs all four seasons with Williams on the team. In those years, he helped the team get to the Eastern Conference Finals three times. In 2022, the Celtics won their 10th conference title and the first one in twelve years. Unfortunately, they met their demise at the hands of the Golden State Warriors in the finals. Williams played a big part in Boston's playoff run, as he had eight games where he was in double figures for scoring. In the 2023 NBA free agency period, the former Tennessee standout finds himself on the Dallas Mavericks, his second NBA team.
