Vols Basketball Drops Non-Conference Schedule

On Monday, the Tennessee Volunteers got their non-conference schedule for the upcoming 2023-24 season.

On Monday, Tennessee basketball got their non-conference schedule for the upcoming season. The schedule features many great matchups, including the Maui Invitational and two games against Big Ten teams.

The schedule kicks off with a Halloween exhibition match against Lenoir Rhyne and follows up with an opening matchup against Tennessee Tech. It is a rematch of last season's opener, which the Vols took 75-43. The big highlight of this schedule release is two Big Ten matchups against well-known basketball programs. One is at Wisconsin on November 10th, and another is at home in Thompson-Boling Arena on December 9th against Illinois.

The schedule includes the already announced Maui Invitational, ACC/SEC matchup with North Carolina and a neutral site game against N.C. State in San Antonio. Tennessee has an extensive history against the Tar Heels as the teams meet up again for the first time since 2021 when the Vols won on a neutral site in Uncasville, Connecticut. The remaining games in the schedule are mid-major schools like Wofford, George Mason, Norfolk State, Tarleton State, and Georgia Southern.

Against mid-majors, the Vols went 6-0 against mid-majors last season. In all of non-conference play last season, Tennessee went 10-2 with losses to Colorado in Nashville for a neutral site contest and on the road at Arizona. A successful part of the non-conference schedule was taking home the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament title and defeating Butler, USC (Calif.), and Kansas in the process. Besides the Colorado loss, the Vols won another neutral site contest against Maryland, in which they won 56-53. The game took place in Brooklyn in the Barclays Center. Last season was a good showing for the Volunteers in non-conference play. With a schedule set up similarly, they look to have the same success in 2023-24.
