Tyler McKinley Commits To Cincinnati Over Tennessee, Others

The Tennessee Volunteers made top six for 2024 four-star forward Tyler McKinley who ultimately chooses to stay home and play for the Cincinnati Bearcats.

While Tennessee was able to stay in the recruitment for a while, it seemed inevitable that Tyler McKinley would be returning to his home state to play college basketball. On Thursday, he made that official, choosing to go back for college in the city he grew up in. The Power Forward is slated to play his final season of high school ball at Link Academy in Branson, Missouri.

McKinley is currently the number 63 ranked player in the class of 2024. At 6'9, McKinley is more of an undersized post that impacts the game in more ways than just offense. It's easy to see why Wes Miller was a fan of McKinley, who can likely have a role as a freshman in two years for Cincinnati.

The reason for that is that McKinley is very coordinated for a big man. This will bode well for him when defending strong post players and rebounding. While McKinley doesn't pop off the screen as a superb athlete, he can make up for it with his IQ and coordination. Getting a big in this class has never been a necessity for Rick Barnes as he has multiple years left from Jonas Aidoo, Tobe Awaka, and the two freshmen in Cade Phillips and J.P. Estrella. In this college basketball climate, it isn't likely all four of them stay in the program, but Tennessee still has plenty of options at the center position. It definitely is more likely they prioritize guards in this class, with Ahmad Nowell still being the main one to watch out for.
