The Vols had a big recruiting weekend these past few days. They hosted several blue-chip prospects for their first spring scrimmage, a period that reportedly looked quite sharp and organized. Initial returns from the past few days seem extremely positive, especially with the top prospects.

Five-star defensive end Williams Nwaneri is a midwest recruitment. Oklahoma and Missouri are the top two contenders for his services, but the Vols have quietly made up ground with him. He visited Knoxville for the first time in January and returned over the weekend for his second look at Tennessee. He was impressed both times and confirmed to 247Sports that he plans to take an official visit to Tennessee this summer.

Nwaneri is a St. Louis native with an all-conference upside. His listed size of 6-5 and 245 pounds is more than enough, and his consistent effort and athleticism make him a force as a 5-technique. The five-star lineman has solid hand-fighting skills and the prototypical length to beat tackles but is still learning how to rush the passer. Pass rush is an art that becomes a chess game at the higher levels; Nwaneri is just beginning to learn these things.

Offensive lineman attempt to swat his hands away, but Nwaneri can quickly counter that. He may rip through, transfer his leverage into a swim move, or push his hands through his assignment's chest.

Good defensive linemen pack a strong punch in their hands, but that doesn't consistently work in college. The best have several counters they can revert to, and Nwaneri has many.
