Georgia’s football program has seen a bit of bad luck this Wednesday afternoon, but it appears to have been beneficial to Tennessee.

Following the news that quarterback Jake Fromm has decided to enter the 2020 NFL Draft, Georgia offensive lineman Cade Mays has entered the transfer portal, per Matt Zenith of AL.com.

As many Tennessee fans know, Mays is a Knoxville product, and he leaned heavily toward the Vols before eventually signing with the Bulldogs near the end of Butch Jones’ time at Tennessee. According to reports from ESPN's senior writer Mark Schlabach, sources have told ESPN that Mays will stay in the SEC East and transfer to Tennessee.

This past season, Mays started 11 of Georgia’s 14 games, with seven coming at right guard, according to Jake Rowe for Georgia’s 247Sports site.

Aside from his movement across the ‘Dawgs’ offensive line, Mays also pitched in at fullback and even tight end, showcasing the mobility he brings to any offense.
Mays would likely have to sit out a season if he transferred to Tennessee, but he is still eligible to use a redshirt. This means that Mays could redshirt the 2020 season wherever he goes while still having two seasons left to play. Mays is so talented and versatile, he could play anywhere along the line for the Vols. Though he would likely be forced to redshirt and sit a season, the way the NCAA handles transfers, he could find a path to earlier eligibility.

But as a native of Knoxville, Mays could also end up on the same line as his brother, Cooper, who started classes this week as an early enrollee for the Vols’ 2020 recruiting class.

Prior to joining the Bulldogs, Mays was a standout at Catholic.

When asked about both of the Mays brothers last summer, Irish coach Steve Matthews said that they both play with “tenacity and a nasty attitude,” so Tennessee would gain quite a combination should Cade decide to join his brother on Rocky Top.
