Do-it-all DB Edwin White details decision to commit to Tennessee

The Vols coaching staff got some good news this past weekend on their first big visit weekend after the February dead period. Edwin White, a 3-Star safety in the class of 2021 decided to announce his commitment to the Vols after spending a weekend in Knoxville with the coaching staff, most notably his area recruiter Tee Martin. This article will introduce you to white and what he brings to the table for this Tennessee team in 2021. We also caught up with White to in an interview to talk about his decision and what led to it.

White is a 6’0 196lb defensive back from Mobile, Alabama. He plays for UMS Wright HS and is ranked as a 3 star by all sites, universally around the top 40 players at his position. White received his offer from this coaching staff all the way back in December of 2017, and committed to the Vols over SEC teams Mississippi State and Ole Miss. White is the definition of a ball hawk safety; he intercepted 9 passes last season and had 87 tackles and 4 forced fumbles to go along with that staggering total. He is an all around stud athlete that will likely be set to blow up before signing day if he keeps up this production.

When asked about why he chose Tennessee, White said “What led to my decision was the loyalty the staff gave to me and my family, and all the players on the team I interacted with were down to earth, chill guys.” It sounds like the family environment surrounding the campus that the coaching staff prides itself on paid off yet again. However, no coach was bigger in this recruitment than Tee Martin, who similarly to White, grew up in Mobile and is that area recruiter. When asked about Tee Martin, White said “Coach Martin was a huge deal the whole time we would just have conversations outside of football about the city, the history, him and my biological dad went to school together so when we talk it’s always a connection.” Tee Martin was the main recruiter, but the appeal for DBs to play under coaches like Jeremy Pruitt and Derrick Ansley also had to be a big selling point as they have made a career out of putting defensive backs into the NFL. When asked about the appeal to play for those guys, White said “That I can really be the greatest under them from all the people they put in the NFL.”

Lastly, when asked about the type of player Tennessee is getting, White said “Tennessee is gonna get a passionate leader and and player that would put a lot of smiles on faces.” With Whites commitment, Tennessee now has 6 commits in the class of 2021 and is sitting at 14th in the nation on 247, and 2nd in the SEC. Now obviously it’s a long way to signing day but Tennessee is off to a solid start in the 2021 recruiting class, and will look to add a lot more to this class over the spring and further beyond.
