Jonathan Kongbo signs with San Francisco 49ers

JAKE NICHOLS- According to his Twitter account, former Tennessee defensive lineman Jonathan Kongbo signed with the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday afternoon.
The details of the contract are still unknown.
Prior to joining San Francisco’s roster, Kongbo clinched a Grey Cup title with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers after being taken fifth overall in the 2019 CFL Draft.
Before heading to his native Canada to begin a professional career, Kongbo served a constant presence on Tennessee’s defensive line.
During his sophomore season, Kongbo racked up 29 tackles with 2.5 in 11 games, his best season for the Vols.
In the latter half of his senior season in Knoxville, the 255-pound Kongbo suffered a leg injury that ended his final campaign on Rocky Top.
In his entire Tennessee career, the Canadian notched 51 tackles with 5.5 for loss, 3.5 sacks and two interceptions.
He then went unselected in the NFL Draft, only to be picked up by Winnipeg prior to the 2019 Canadian season.
In his time in the CFL, Kongbo notched 12 tackles for Winnipeg, and he’ll look to aid a 49ers defense that currently ranks second in the NFL.
Now, Kongbo will look to aid the 49ers going into 2020, and he’ll do so at a spot where San Fransisco “needed an infusion of Canadian talent,” according to Winnipeg Sun writer Ted Wyman.
Along with Kongbo, the team also signed defensive tackle Earl Mitchell, who will be eligible for the playoffs after coming out of retirement
