Vols Commit Cooper Mays talks handling Tennessee-Georgia game, message to fellow recruits

For the Mays family, the Tennessee-Georgia game is vastly different than it used to be. Kevin Mays was an all- Sec player for the Vols on the offensive line during the early ’90s, it looked like his oldest son Cade would follow in his footsteps before making a business decision to sign with Georgia in the 2018 class. Now the next man up in the Mays football lineage is 2020 Tennessee commitment, Cooper Mays. The younger Mays will be at the game tonight to cheer for his brother, who is playing against a program that Cooper will be recruiting for. Cooper Mays discusses how he is handling this and what he wants to see from the Vols tonight.

After a battle on ESPN2 on Thursday night, Mays said of what he wants to see from Tennessee, “I want to see a win for Tennessee. Just some progression.”

Mays said of his brother, ” I am just looking for Cade to do good against whoever he goes against. I am not going to pull against Tennessee, but I always want to see Cade do good, which I think is respectable.”

This is a big recruiting weekend for Tennessee with multiple in-state targets rolling into town. Mays has continued to be a key piece of holding this 2020 class together, as the Vols endure an arduous start.

Mays said of what is important for this class right now, ” the biggest thing is getting them on campus to see a game. I know that we may not win it, but Tennessee fans are the best in the country, and I believe that wholeheartedly. It does not matter who we are playing. It is a crazy atmosphere, and it is hard to not fall in love with it.”

Mays went onto say of what he tells other recruits, “I mean if we are getting beat and the crowd is still into it and crazy, amazing, and supportive, then just imagine what it will be like when we are back on top of things again.”

Mays’s top targets this weekend will include Jay Hardy and Omari Thomas. Two four-star, top 100 defensive linemen that could be plug and play guys if Tennessee signs them.
