TMG Newsmaker of The Week: Khali Tate

Arizona QB Khali Tate had a bittersweet opening game

This time there was no Heisman hype preceding the season. No mention of All Amerrican status. And barely a mention of even being an all Pac-12 candidate at quarterback.

A lot has changed in a year for Arizona's Khali Tate, who dazzled the world of college football by running for more than 1,400 yards as a sophomore.

A new head coach (Kevin Sumlin) a lingering ankle injury and some questionable use of Tate's enormous stills erased all of that.

Which is why when Arizona opened its season at Hawaii on Saturday night, there was a sense of....anticipation, curiosity, as well as expectation for what Tate could do as his senior season began.

What the 6-foot-2 inch, 215 pound quarterback gave Arizona and its fans was a late night taste of everything. After spotting Hawaii a 14-0 lead 10 minutes into the game, the Wildcats, led by Tate, put on a show which didn't end until the final second with Tate on the Hawaii 1 yard line and Arizona on the short end of a 45-38 score.

All Tate did was complete 22 of 39 passes for 361 yards and three TDs and rush for 108 yards more on 13 carries. He did have two picks, but there was no question that Tate was ready to play.

For all of that and for what might come in the next several weeks, Khali Tate is TMG's first Newsmaker of the Week for the 2019 college football season.
