STORRS, Conn. – The Huskies dropped the opening doubles point but had a clean sweep in the singles play to grab their first dual match win of the year.

"This was a great opening win to our season today," stated Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall. "Fairfield was a very strong opponent and battled us tough in doubles and singles. We lost the doubles point, as they played a little better than us in the end of two of the matches."

The Huskies did grab a doubles win at No. 2 with sophomore Aleksandra Karamyshrev (Aston, Md.) and freshman Isabel Petri-Berre (Lund, Sweden) posting a 6-4 win over Amanda Nowak and Katarina Plumtree.

"We talked about wanting to bring confidence and play to our strengths in singles, and that is exactly what we did at the start," commented Marshall. "We won the first set in five of our six matches, to set the tone. But Fairfield battled back and took four of the singles matches to three sets. We ended up winning all four of those three sets matches, which was awesome."

Petri-Bere got a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5 over Francesca Karman and sophomore Leonie Hoppe (Munich, Germany) won her first set 6-4 and then the match when Plumtree was forced to retire in the second set.

At No. 1, senior Julieanne Bou (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) won her three-set battle with Sandra Bozinovic, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. At No. 3, Karamyshev beat Nowak in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 and junior Denise Lai (Setauket, N.Y.) was a three-set winner at No. 6 over Sophia Prinos, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.

At No. 4, junior Caroline Cook (Naples, Fla.) rebounded from losing the first set to Aina March, 7-5, to pull off a 6-3, 6-3 comeback win.

"I was really proud of the effort today, and very pleased with their toughness in the singles matches."

The Huskies are back in action this weekend taking on Drexel on Friday up at Army and back at home hosting Rutgers at Magic Lincer Tennis Club on Sunday.
