The Eagles Have Reached Out to Former Utah QB Tyler Huntley

According to insider reports, the Philadelphia Eagles have reached out to former Utah Utes quarterback and current NFL free agent Tyler Huntley.

According to Jake Rabadi of The Liberty Line, the Eagles have been searching for a backup quarterback this offseason. Early reports also indicate the Eagles have interest in the Los Angeles Chargers free agent and former NDSU quarterback Easton Stick.

Huntley would be an ideal fit for the Eagles system, as he possesses similar traits to Eagles starting quarterback Jalen Hurts.

The former first-team All-Pac-12 quarterback started 33 games for the Utes before signing as an undrafted free agent with the Baltimore Ravens after the 2020 draft. In four seasons as the Ravens' primary backup to Lamar Jackson, the 6-foot-1 dual-threat played in over 20 games (10 starts), amassed over 2000 passing yards and had 13 combined touchdowns (passing and rushing).

With the Ravens, Huntley was also named to the 2023 Pro Bowl Games. The Ravens backup, who started five games in 2022 in place of an injured Jackson, finished the regular season with 658 passing yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions.

If Huntley were to sign with the Eagles, he would join new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore’s system. The Eagles hired Moore to replace Brian Johnson, another former Ute, who joined the Washington Commanders staff in the offseason.

In Philadelphia, Huntley would once again be teammates with Britain Covey. The two former Utes played together in college in 2018 and 2019.

Within the Eagles roster, Huntley would find himself in a familiar position. Backup to a highly-paid and premiere NFL starting quarterback who has a history of injuries. Hurts suffered a high ankle sprain that caused him to miss a single game in 2021, had a minor shoulder separation that caused him to miss two games in 2022, and sustained a gruesome finger injury last season in a game against the New York Giants.

While hopes are that Hurts won’t get hurt again, having Huntley as a backup would ensure Philadelphia confidence that an injury to their starter would not completely derail their season.
