Urban Meyer hasn't coached at the college level since 2018

Former Utah, Florida, and Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer is regarded as one of the best college football coaches of this generation, but he walked away from coaching football on a couple of occasions.

He walked away from Florida and took a couple of years off before returning to coach at Ohio State, and then walked away from the Buckeyes in 2018. He then transitioned into television where he was an analyst, but was lured back to coaching at the NFL level with the Jacksonville Jaguars. That didn't even last a full season before he was fired, and he again returned to his analyst role for Fox Sports.

Before taking the job with the Jaguars, he was viewed as the top target for the University of Texas gig. Even after his rough stint in the pros, Meyer who has won three titles at the college level is considered a candidate for every major job. Something we are seeing on Sunday, as Texas A&M fired Jimbo Fisher and Meyer's name has instantly entered the conversation as a possibility according to On3's Andy Staples.

Meyer, the former Ohio State, Florida, Utah and Jacksonville Jaguars coach, probably would consider a job at this level. But the question is whether Meyer’s management style would work in this era of college football. He’d probably find a major college job in the NIL era — and the players-as-employees era that likely comes next — to be more similar to his time coaching the Jaguars than his time coaching the Buckeyes. And that Jaguars tenure was a disaster. Unless Meyer can prove he can adapt to a time when players have far more agency than they did even five years ago, he might be happier staying at Fox.

Staples did however question if Meyer would be able to coach in this transfer portal and NIL era, as neither of those things were prevalent during his tenure. Something that could be a tough adjustment for Meyer who appears to have an old-school approach and mindset.

Aside from Meyer, one Texas A&M fan even suggested that Kyle Whittingham could be a good option as well.
