Janssen's Goal Lifts No. 6 UVA Field Hockey Over No. 14 Harvard

The Virginia field hockey team is showing it can win in a few different ways. After scoring six goals in each of their two previous wins over Temple and William & Mary, the Cavaliers endured a defensive slugfest and emerged victorious, as Laura Janssen scored the lone goal of the match to lead No. 6 Virginia to a 1-0 victory over No. 14 Harvard on a rainy Sunday afternoon in Charlottesville.
Neither team managed to generate many scoring chances early on, with Harvard attempting the lone shot of the first quarter, which was saved by UVA goalkeeper Tyler Kennedy. Things ramped up a bit in the second quarter, with a combined five penalty corners and the Crimson attempting four shots and the Cavaliers attempting three. Only one of UVA's shots went on cage, while Kennedy had to come up with two more saves to maintain the scoreless tie going into halftime.
On Virginia's fourth penalty corner of the match, the Cavaliers finally broke through for the first and only goal of the match a little under five minutes into the third quarter. Jans Croon fired a shot from the top of the circle off the corner and her shot went to the far side of the cage, where Laura Janssen perfectly deflected it in for her second goal of the season.

Polishing off UVA's second shutout of the season required one more big save from Tyler Kennedy in the fourth quarter, but the Cavaliers indeed held on for the 1-0 win despite getting outshot 10-6 in the match.
That makes four straight victories for Virginia (5-1) and it's an important win for the Cavaliers, as they face a challenging stretch of five-consecutive matches against ranked opponents. That stretch continues as Virginia hosts No. 16 Boston College on Friday at 5pm at the UVA Turf Field in Charlottesville.
