No. 9 UVA Women's Lacrosse Falls in Hard-Fought Battle at No. 1 North Carolina

The Cavaliers gave the top-ranked and undefeated Tar Heels their toughest test since last year's national title game, but couldn't quite snap UNC's 46-game regular season winning streak, which is now tied for the longest such streak in the history of women's lacrosse.

UVA trailed by just one goal with five minutes left, but the Tar Heels pulled away in the final minutes as No. 9 Virginia suffered its first loss of the season in a 17-12 defeat at No. 1 North Carolina on Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill.

Rachel Clark scored a hat trick in the first quarter to help Virginia build a 6-4 lead, but North Carolina rattled off three-straight goals and six of the next seven, taking a 10-8 lead into the halftime break.

UNC went on another 3-0 run to open the third quarter and built a commanding 13-8 lead, but the Cavaliers didn't give up. Virginia scored the next four goals, including back-to-back goals from Ashlyn McGovern to make it 13-12 with 4:52 remaining.

Virginia couldn't quite complete the comeback though as the Tar Heels got goals from four different scorers to seal the 17-12 win. UNC has now won 28 games in a row.

Ashlyn McGovern and Rachel Clark each recorded four goals in the game and Kiki Shaw and Jaime Biskup had two goals apiece, but no other Cavaliers scored in the contest. North Carolina, meanwhile, had 10 different goal scorers in the game and six with multiple goals, led by Caroline Godine with three goals and two assists.

Draw controls were 24-9 in favor of North Carolina and UVA was called for 29 fouls as compared to 11 for UNC. The Tar Heels outshot the Cavaliers 36-29 and put 26 of those shots on cage.

Now 6-1 and 2-1 in ACC play, Virginia will play a non-conference in-state road game at Richmond on Wednesday at 7pm.
