UVA Women's Tennis Advances to NCAA Third Round With Pair of Sweeps

The Cavaliers swept Long Island and Princeton in the first and second round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Championships

Virginia is advancing to the third round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship and the Cavaliers did so in convincing fashion, earning a pair of sweeps against Long Island on Friday and Princeton on Saturday at Boar's Head in Charlottesville. 

NCAA First Round - Friday: No. 12 Virginia 4, LIU 0

UVA’s dominant weekend started right from the jump on Friday as Julia Adams and Melodie Collard won 6-1 and Natasha Subhash and Annabelle Xu won 6-2 on court 2 to claim the doubles point for the Cavaliers. Collard was perfect in singles action, winning 6-0, 6-0 on court 5. Xu added a 6-1, 6-2 on court 3 and Hibah Shaikh clinched the victory with another perfect showing on court 4, securing a 6-0, 6-0 victory to wrap up the match. 

NCAA Second Round - Saturday: No. 12 Virginia 4, Princeton 0

Virginia followed up Friday’s strong match with another convincing performance on Saturday against Princeton. The teams of Subhash and Xu and Ziodato and Shaikh both earned 6-2 wins to pick up the doubles point for UVA. 

Collard gave the Cavaliers another point with a 7-6, 6-0 on court 6 and then Ziodato won 6-3, 6-4 on court 5 to make it 3-0. After dropping the first set 0-6, Xu bounced back and rallied to win 0-6, 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the match for Virginia. 

Virginia advances to the third round for the third-straight season and will play at No. 5 seed Michigan in the Ann Arbor Super Regional on Saturday, May 13th at 1pm.
