Virginia Women's Tennis Beats San Diego 4-1 in ITA Consolation Match

Virginia's weekend trip to Seattle for the 2023 ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship did not go how the Cavaliers planned or hoped. After starting the season 5-0, UVA suffered back-to-back tough losses to No. 12 Michigan 4-2 and No. 8 Pepperdine 4-1.

On Sunday, though, Virginia bounced back with a solid 4-1 victory over No. 17 San Diego in the final consolation match at the ITA Indoors in Seattle.

UVA's team of Julia Adams and Melodie Collard crushed San Diego's No. 15-ranked doubles team of Kailey Evans and Elizabeth Goldsmith 6-1 on the top court in doubles play. Sara Ziodato and Elaine Chervinsky dropped their match to Claudia De Las Heras and Jordyn McBride 6-2, but Annabella Xu and Natasha Subhash defeated Filippa Bruu-Syversen and Victoria Kalaitzis 6-2 on court 2 to claim the doubles point for Virginia.

Annabella Xu started singles play by defeating Kailey Evans 6-2, 6-1 on court 5 and Natasha Subhash picked up a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Claudia De Las Heras on court 2 to make it 3-0 in favor of the Cavaliers.

San Diego got on the board on court 6 as Jordyn McBride defeated Melodie Collard 6-3, 6-2, but UVA wrapped up the win on the top court as No. 60 Julia Adams beat No. 37 Solymar Colling 6-3, 6-3.

“We learned a lot from this weekend,” said Virginia head coach Sara O’Leary. “We lost two close matches against Michigan and Pepperdine, but we definitely took a lot from those matches. This is a very tough tournament and every team is good. We are right there with these teams, but have a few areas we can really focus on and improve on. I’m really proud of the resilience the team showed today against San Diego and throughout the weekend."

Virginia (6-2) returns to Charlottesville and has two weeks off before beginning ACC play against North Carolina on Friday (2/24) and against Duke on Sunday (2/26) at Boar's Head.
