Virginia Women's Basketball Takes Down No. 5 Virginia Tech in Commonwealth Clash

The Hoos topped the Hokies 80-75 in front of the largest crowd to ever attend a women's basketball game in the Commonwealth of Virginia

The Virginia women's basketball team saved its best for last, celebrating senior day and the regular season finale with an electric 80-75 victory over No. 5 Virginia Tech in the Commonwealth Clash on Sunday night at John Paul Jones Arena, which welcomed in the largest crowd (11,975) to ever attend a women's basketball game in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

It was a back-and-forth affair from start, as the game featured 10 ties and 11 lead changes and neither team led by more than six points. With the game tied at 72-72 with less than two minutes remaining, Virginia delivered a clutch 6-0 run with London Clarkson scoring a big-time reverse layup and then Kymora Johnson stole the ball on Virginia Tech's next possession, taking it the other way for a layup. Sam Brunelle salted the game away with a pair of free throws with 13 seconds to go as Virginia went on to win 80-75.

Virginia Tech lost two-time ACC Player of the Year Elizabeth Kitley to an injury early in the third quarter, though Kitley had already posted 20 points and nine rebounds at that point. Georgia Amoore picked up the slack for the Hokies, scoring 39 points and knocking down eight threes.

Virginia was led by sensational freshman and Charlottesville native Kymora Johnson, who had 21 points, eight assists, and four rebounds in the win. Senior Camryn Taylor had a great performance in her final game at John Paul Jones Arena, recording 17 points and seven rebounds. Paris Clark had 16 points, six rebounds, and four assists.

With the win, which was UVA's fourth over a ranked opponent this season, Virginia finishes the season 15-14 overall and 7-11 in the ACC. The Cavaliers will be the No. 11 seed in the ACC Women's Basketball Tournament, which begins next week at Greensboro Coliseum. UVA will face No. 14 seed Wake Forest on Wednesday at 6:30pm on the ACC Network.

The win also earns a half a point in the 2023-2024 Commonwealth Clash, which Virginia now leads 7.0-6.0.
