Bronson Receives East-West Shrine Bowl Invite Even with No Game

The Husky defensive tackle received a ceremonial spot even though the pandemic scrubbed the contest.

Former University of Washington defensive tackle Josiah Bronson has been selected by the East-West Shrine Bowl, even though the all-star game on Jan. 23 in St. Petersburg, Florida, was canceled long ago because of the pandemic.

While no one will compete on the football field, bowl officials still wanted to make sure deserving seniors were recognized.

The 6-foot-3, 300-pound Bronson seems like an ideal player for this game considering the football journey he experienced.

A Kent, Washington, native, he began his college career at Temple University in Philadelphia and stayed two seasons before transferring to the UW and spending four years there.

East to West.

Over the weekend, Bronson, who started 14 games for the Huskies over the past two seasons, made it official that he was turning to the NFL draft, bypassing yet another season of college eligibility afforded him.

Bronson becomes the 150th Husky dating back to 1925 to be honored by the Shriners,  and this is not counting the two WSU players (defensive back Ken Greene and kicker Gavin Hedrick) oddly found listed in the UW records.

Offensive tackle Jared Hilbers represented the UW a year ago. The game was held for several years in San Francisco before moving to Texas and now Florida.
