WVU Falls Apart in Extra Innings and Drops Series to Oklahoma State

Granville, WV – West Virginia went into extra innings tied at one with Oklahoma State, but the Cowboys (18-9, 5-3) put up nine runs in the 11th for the lopsided 10-1 series deciding win over the Mountaineers. (15-12, 4-4).
“Two really good pitching performances," said WVU head coach Randy Mazey. "Right when you think both games are going to be two to one. We had chances to score there, they made a great play in left field, saved the game. We would have walked them off, if the kid doesn't make that catch, and then, it got out of hand, but that was a much better game to score says."
West Virgina senior Reed Chumley ripped a solo home run in the first inning to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead.
Oklahoma State tied the game in the top of the eighth when consecutive singles from junior Zach Ehrhard and sophomore Nolan Schubart placed runners at the corners. Then, a groundball to shortstop for a double play scored Ehrhard from third, tying the game at one.
West Virginia Senior Derek Clark went nine innings and struck out six, allowing one run while Oklahoma State junior Brian Holliday, who came into the weekend ranked second in the Big 12 Conference with a 1.87 ERA, held the Mountaineers to a run and the game would go into extra innings.
“That’s as good as you can pitch against a really good team,” Mazey said.
In the top of the 11th, Oklahoma State senior Tyler Wulfert and junior Colin Brueggemann hit back-to-back home runs. Then, after freshman Avery Ortiz worked a full count walk, senior Jaxson Crull ripped an RBI double into the gap in left centerfield for a 4-1 lead.
