Neal Brown Gives Explanation for DE Sean Martin's Absence vs EKU

Schuyler Callihan

If you watched closely to the Mountaineers' game this past Saturday, you might have noticed that true freshman defensive end Sean Martin did not make an appearance.

Martin, a Bluefield, WV native, is one of the true freshmen that head coach Neal Brown and his staff have been very high on since the beginning fall camp. Unfortunately, he was forced to sit out the season opener after being identified in COVID-19 contact tracing.

"We've got two guys right now that are true freshmen for us that are walk-on players that are out right now. They are the only positive COVID cases we have in our program. Sean [Martin] missed the game due to contact tracing. He's well, he's fine," Brown said. "He's a guy that we wanted to play, but he was out. He really had his best week of practice last week until he was out, and he was a guy that was definitely going to play."

Given that West Virginia has a bye week this week, it should allow Martin enough time to clear the COVID protocols and be able to make his collegiate debut in Stillwater next week vs. Oklahoma State. Neal Brown believes that he has an extraordinarily high ceiling and will play a lot of football over the next three-five years.

"Sean's a guy that we're really excited about. I like his makeup, how he's worked since he's been here on campus. He's going to be a real bright spot for us."

Due to HIPAA rules, the identity of the two athletes who have tested positive for COVID-19 must remain private.

This sorta baffles me tbh. How can you "contact trace" a player who practiced last week without closing up the whole team? I'm prob missing a step somewhere. I'm being honest here so if anyone could help me out I'd appreciate it. GoEers

The term "contract tracing" refers to learning ALL the contacts that the person may have had, both INSIDE the program AND OUTSIDE the program. This information is used to predict & track the potential spread, & may or MAY NOT lead to the quarantining of specific people or groups, like the "whole team".
(i.e., Did he go partying on High St., Kegler's, Cheat Lake, etc.?) It is NOT limited to the MOUNTAINEER program buddy. There ARE other priorities here besides MOUNTAINEER Footsball. A Pandemic kinda thing, ya know?
Helpful or not buddy?

I appreciate the help bud. It gives me a better understanding of how they're going about the process. Still sort of wondering how if one guy tests positive that's been in close contact with most of his teammates during contact practices that all of the guys aren't put under close watch?

Glad to help. Since there is NO NATIONAL CONTACT TRACING & TESTING STANDARD & The CDC has been co-opted by wing-nut political operatives, every separate entity is responsible for their own local/state/company/organizational protocols.
I'mma tested every 2 weeks, but since we had a team member test positive a few days ago, we were re-tested today & mask/gown/goggles/distancing protocols have been re-instituted. The positive person is in quarantine now. (Thanks Bro!)
The assumption is that the infectious contact was (most likely) from outside the team members in these cases. All it takes is ONE weak link to break the chain. SMDH.
This is NOT a "hoax". NOT. EVEN. CLOSE. #StayHealthyBros !! #TrustTheClimb
