Friday evening, the West Virginia football staff received a verbal commitment from Midlothian, Virginia defensive end Makai Byerson (6'4", 235 lbs).

West Virginia was one of Byerson's four finalists, choosing the Mountaineers over Virginia Tech, Rutgers, and Kentucky while also receiving offers from Pitt, Tennessee, Duke, Maryland and Virginia.

Byerson took an official visit to WVU in early June and shared his experience with Mountaineers Now.

"It was great," said Byerson. "I got to spend more time with the staff and really go in-depth about how they see me in the program and how they can help me become a better player and person. The whole staff from top to bottom are really on the same page with helping us student-athletes. Plus, I like the versatility the d-line plays with. It was something I didn't fully know coming into the weekend."

Byerson makes the 16th commitment for the Mountaineers as part of the 2024 class and the fourth defensive lineman, joining Richard James, Obinna Onwuka, and Elijah Kinser.

Byerson's father Brad was a member of the WVU men's basketball team from 2003-05.
