NBA Coach of the Year Candidates for 2023-24: Who are the Favorites?

With the best sportsbooks for betting on NBA Coach of the Year candidates now revealed, let’s take advantage of them to find the top picks available. First, the top three candidates:

Mark Daigneault NBA Coach of the Year Odds +150

Expectations for Oklahoma City Thunder’s coach, Mark Daigneault, were relatively low when he started his third season as head coach last season, but he managed to make the Thunder better than expected after consecutive seasons of less than 25 wins. As a coach focused on player development, his impact was best reflected in the rise of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Despite not being very efficient, the Thunder were known for their top-level scoring rate last year.

They also led the league in forced turnovers, which opened up more chances for them. However, despite making it to the NBA Play-In Tournament, they were knocked out in the game for the eighth seed. That said, in a highly competitive Western Conference, the Thunder would have to demonstrate significant improvement for Daigneault to be a potential Coach of the Year candidate, but the potential is definitely there.

Erik Spoelstra NBA Coach of the Year Odds +8500

Despite his impressive track record as one of the NBA’s best coaches for over ten years, Erik Spoelstra hasn’t yet ever received the award. Maybe this will be the season. Although Miami made it to the NBA Finals, they’re currently considered a good team, but not truly a championship contender. Therefore, if they prove the odds wrong again and show that they are a contending team, then Spoelstra could be in the running for the prestigious award.

Missing out on star point guard Damian Lillard could even fuel these chance.  The duo of Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo, plus the return of Tyler Herro could feasibly get a top three spot in the less competitive Eastern Conference, reflecting very positively on Coach Spoelstra and giving him his best shot at the Coach of the Year award.

Michael Malone NBA Coach of the Year Odds +12000

The Denver Nuggets led the Western Conference throughout the 2022-23 NBA season, and expectations are high for their performance in the 2023-24 season. As the 2022-23 NBA champions, the Nuggets are expected to continue their dominance as they defend their title. With Nikola Jokic, two-time NBA MVP, at the helm, there are seemingly no limits to the Nuggets’ potential. Under the guidance of head coach Michael Malone, the Nuggets have created one of the NBA’s top offenses, centering around superstar Nikola Jokic.

To be considered an improvement over their previous season, which saw them win 59 games, the Nuggets would need to consistently overpower their opponents. However, given Malone’s balanced strategy and highly effective offense, it seems likely that the Nuggets will only get better.

NBA Coach of the Year Predictions: Who Will Win in 2023-24?

With Chet Holmgren entering the fold, the Thunder, led by Shai-Gilgeous Alexander and Co. are looking to have a breakout season in a competitive conference. The man steering the ship, Mike Daigneault, has catapulted into the leading odds for Coach of the Year. While a top five seed in the West this year would most likely guarantee Daigneault will win this award. While we certainly believe Daigneault can get it done, we are going to pick a man who has surprisingly never one this award before.

Yes, Adrian Griffin with Lillard and Giannis would make sense in Milwaukee. Yes, Joe Mazzulla in Boston makes sense, but at +8500, Erik Spoelstra with the Miami Heat is our expert prediction. Spoelstra has been the head coach of the Miami Heat since 2008, and despite a couple of rings with LeBron and a couple of finals appearances with Butler, he has yet to win this award. He is one of the longest-tenured head coaches in the game, and through a variety of rosters, he has proven his steady hand and genius ability.

If anything, he could win the award this year if the Heat are able to make it back to playoffs, as a delayed award for what they were able to do after reaching the finals in 2022-23, despite being a play-in team. We believe the Heat still have something in the tank, and the chemistry this groups has built can carry over enough to earn Spoelstra this coveted award.

NBA Coach of the Year 2023-24: Longshot Candidates to Watch

Nick Nurse NBA Coach of the Year Odds +2000

Following the Toronto Raptors’ unsuccessful attempt to reach the playoffs in the 2022-23 season, Nick Nurse was removed from his head coach position. However, he soon took over as the head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers for the 2023-24 NBA season. Nurse, who led the Raptors to their first NBA championship in 2019, is now expected to repeat this success with a talented 76ers team. As one of the NBA’s more creative coaches, Nurse is expected to guide the 76ers out of their postseason slump, with Joel Embiid being the centerpiece.

Ime Udoka NBA Coach of the Year Odds +2700

Five teams will be under new head coaches in the 2023-24 season. Of these, only the Rockets seem to have the team with true potential to see a significant increase in wins on the year. They’ve recently signed two notable free agents, Fred VanVleet and Dillon Brooks, as well as top rookies Amen Thompson and Cam Whitmore.

Additionally, their young core is projected to develop more, which should notably boost the Rockets’ win total. Ime Udoka’s potential to instill some much-needed discipline in this young roster, along with his demonstrated ability to make crucial adjustments, add to their value of being a team that could greatly improve next season.

How the NBA Coach of the Year is Decided

Every year, a group of leading sports journalists and broadcasters cast their votes to determine the winner of the NBA Coach of the Year award. Every member of this panel has three votes, and they are asked to list the top coaches according to their preference, beginning with their top choice.

Trends play a critical role in awards as they give you a glimpse into the voters’ mindsets when making their decisions. By understanding what attributes they value in a candidate, it becomes easier to predict which coach might meet the criteria. During the 2022-23 Coach of the Year voting, Mike Brown won the award unanimously collecting all 100 first-place votes. Here are some trends to consider before betting on the NBA Coach of the Year:

  • Over the last 10 seasons, seven of the Coach of the Year award winners were returning coaches while three were in their first season with a team
  • One of the key statistics for a coach of the year award is a significant jump in winning percentage from the year before
  • Four of the returning coaches who have more recently won the award were following a season where they made a Finals appearance
