Betting on NFL Coach of the Year

At the time of publishing, only a few notable sportsbooks had NFL Coach of the Year odds for 2023-24 available to bet on. DraftKings Sportsbook is obviously one of them, as we just listed their top NFL Coach of the Year candidates for 2023-24. The two others that we’ll mention are FanDuel Sportsbook and BetMGM Sportsbook.

Because NFL Coach of the Year betting odds can vary across different sportsbooks, it’s smart to have accounts on multiple platforms. This gives you the best chance to find the most value between odds discrepancies in the NFL Coach of the Year futures market, while also taking full advantage of different sign-up promotions. Although some other top sportsbooks may be slower at releasing NFL Coach of the Year betting odds, we’ve still provided the sign-up bonuses along with the three currently with lines available.

Whether it’s bonus bets, bet insurance or another reward, they’re all useful when deciding which NFL Coach of the Year candidates you want to bet on.

NFL Coach of the Year Candidates for 2023-24: Who Are the Favorites?

Referencing back to that first table of NFL Coach of the Year odds for 2023-24, the top four betting favorites entering this campaign were as follows: Dan Campbell of the Detroit Lions, Sean Payton of the Denver Broncos, Matt Eberflus of the Chicago Bears and Robert Saleh of the New York Jets. Just from that breakdown alone, it’s fairly obvious what’s expected out of the top NFL Coach of the Year favorites.

They all had low-mid level teams last season, so sportsbooks are expecting these men to rally their troops and put together a competitive, successful season. Now, let’s further analyze these four NFL Coach of the Year candidates for 2023-24 one-by-one.

Dan Campbell NFL Coach of the Year Odds (+1500 at DraftKings)

It’s probably quite obvious why Campbell leads the pack in terms of odds to win NFL Coach of the Year. The Lions have been struggling to find success in what feels like forever, and he finally has his guys winning some games, not just playing their hearts out. After countless seasons of sub-.500 ball, Detroit finished 2022-23 with a 9-8 record and just barely missed out on a playoff spot.

Sean Payton NFL Coach of the Year Odds (+20000 at DraftKings)

This is one of the more interesting NFL Coach of the Year favorites, as Payton didn’t even coach in the league last season. The longtime New Orleans Saints head coach is back in the NFL with the Denver Broncos. After last season’s disaster (5-12), the pieces might all be aligned just perfectly in Denver for Payton. He’ll take charge of an already strong defense and an offense quarterbacked by Russell Wilson.

Matt Eberflus NFL Coach of the Year Odds (+50000 at DraftKings)

These current NFL Coach of the Year odds for 2023-24 don’t quite represent it, but Eberflus may have the toughest task of any of these top coaches in winning the award. The Bears seem to have more holes to fill compared to the other teams with coaches listed this high, but they definitely have talent. Justin Fields is one of the best dual-threat play callers in the league, and it shouldn’t be too tall of a task to improve their 3-14 record from last season.

Robert Saleh NFL Coach of the Year Odds (N/A at DraftKings)

One of the most talked about NFL Coach of the Year candidates for 2023-24 is without a doubt Saleh. The recent addition of quarterback Aaron Rodgers certainly didn’t dim the light on this Jets squad, either. Saleh will now have a veteran manning the offense and a stout defense on the other side of the ball. They finished last season at just 7-10, and on paper, this season’s team should shatter that win total.

NFL Coach of the Year Predictions: Who Will Win in 2023-24?

Demeco Ryans NFL Coach of the Year Odds (+1100 at DraftKings)

One of the NFL Coach of the Year favorites we mentioned above was Ryans of the Houston Texans, who were expected to be among the worst teams in the entire NFL. However, through the first half of the season, they have a .500 record and are right in the mix of things in the AFC South. Of course, rookie QB CJ Stroud has plenty to do with that, but Ryans has also spear-headed the defense that has allowed just barely over 20 points per game. If Houston even gets in the playoff discussion, Ryans absolutely has a shot to win the award.

Mike Tomlin NFL Coach of the Year Odds (+7500 at DraftKings)

Yet again, the Pittsburgh Steelers are making noise in the AFC North. The division is absolutely stacked, and while their wins may not look pretty, the fact remains that Tomlin has this Steelers team at 5-3 through the first half of the year. They were expected to finish last in the AFC North, but Tomlin's streak looks very much alive. He's in his 16th season coaching the Steelers and has never once had a losing season. That is absolutely remarkable, and they look poised to frustrate teams like the Buffalo Bills, who are expecting to be in the playoffs, but have gotten off to a slow start.

NFL Coach of the Year 2023-24: Longshot Candidates to Watch

Of course, there are also some dark horse candidates when taking a look at the current NFL Coach of the Year odds for 2023-24. The first name we want to bring up is that of Shane Steichen. Being a first-time NFL head coach in his first year with the team, he definitely has an uphill battle. With how bad the Indianapolis Colts were last season, he shouldn’t have to improve too much to be considered.

They drafted their quarterback of the future in Anthony Richardson and have a stud running back in Jonathon Taylor. If the defense can make some needed changes, this could easily be a much-improved team. Steichen’s NFL Coach of the Year odds for 2023-24 currently sit at +1100 at DraftKings.

Another one of the NFL Coach of the Year candidates for 2023-24 we think is underrated is John Harbaugh. The Baltimore Ravens finished at a solid 10-7 last season and made the playoffs, but much more was expected from them.

They finally inked their guy in Lamar Jackson to a long-term deal so that drama should be behind everyone. After improving mightily in the draft, the Ravens could maybe even be Super Bowl contenders this season. Harbaugh’s odds of winning NFL Coach of the Year also sit at a valuable +2500 at DraftKings, as he finalizes our NFL Coach of the Year longshots.

How the NFL Coach of the Year is Decided

The NFL Coach of the Year award is given annually to the NFL head coach that is said to have had the most outstanding season. This award is voted on by the Associated Press (AP) and has taken place since 1957. A common misconception, the top NFL Coach of the Year favorites typically come from previously bad teams that have had a positive turnaround in a short amount of time, not necessarily the head coach on the best team overall. So, while it’s important to keep an eye on the NFL Coach of the Year futures market, it is ultimately voted upon, rather than the odds determining the winner.

Unlike awards for actual players, it’s difficult to find many trends or statistics that back up who will win the NFL Coach of the Year award. This is mainly because of the way the winner is selected, as was highlighted above. The team’s talent level certainly plays a factor in this decision, along with the coach’s ability to make the most out of said talent. If it was just given to the coach from the best team each season, it would just be the Super Bowl winning coach being named NFL Coach of the Year over and over.
