NFL Defensive Player of the Year Candidates for 2023-24: Who Are the Favorites?

As pass rushers continue to become one of the most sought-after positions in the league, it’s no surprise that we see several atop the list of the NFL Defensive Player of the Year betting odds. Below, we’ve dived a bit deeper into a few of the top NFL Defensive Player of the Year favorites:

Micah Parsons NFL Defensive Player of the Year Odds (+250 at DraftKings)

Leading the way in terms of the NFL Defensive Player of the Year candidates is Dallas Cowboys edge rusher Micah Parsons. The youngster out of Penn State has been in the NFL for just two seasons, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a fan surprised that he’s ahead of the pack in terms of the current NFL Defensive Player of the Year for 2023-24.

The former Nittany Lion wasted no time making a splash, recording 13 sacks in his rookie season. Not only that, but he also completely put to bed the idea of a sophomore slump, recording 13.5 sacks just last season. Many analysts made NFL Defensive Player of the Year predictions that he would win each of those seasons, and rightfully so, as he came second in the voting each of his first two years in the league.

Will this finally be his year? DraftKings' odds have shifted from +650 preseason to +250 after the Cowboys' successful season, indicating he has the best chances out of all the NFL Defensive Player of the Year candidates for 2023-24.

Myles Garrett NFL Defensive Player of the Year Odds (-240 at DraftKings)

Another prominent pass rusher just behind Parsons in the current NFL Defensive Player of the Year odds is Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns. He’s dealt with several injuries in his career but has missed just one game over the last two seasons.

In both the past two seasons, Garrett has recorded an incredible 16 sacks. In just a six-year career, the former Aggie out of Texas A&M has already recorded 74.5 sacks. In a division (AFC North) where he faces potential MVP quarterbacks in Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow, Garrett could have the high-profile impact needed to make NFL Defensive Player of the Year predictions for 2023-24 come to fruition.

Garrett wasted no time helping the Browns to a crucial Week 1 victory over division rival Cincinnati Bengals, recording a sack and a tack for loss en route to assisting a defense that allowed just three points to Joe Burrow and a prolific offense.

T.J. Watt NFL Defensive Player of the Year Odds (+380 at DraftKings)

Speaking of the AFC North, the NFL Defensive Player of the Year betting odds take us to another pass rusher in the division. The little brother of J.J. Watt, who won NFL Defensive Player of the Year three times in his illustrious career, already has one to add to the family shelf that he won just two seasons ago.

Last year was cut short for Watt, as injuries caused him to play in just 10 games. Despite playing in just over half the season, he was still in the mix for the NFL Defensive Player of the Year candidates. Like Garrett, he too has been in the league for six seasons. In that time frame, he’s already accumulated 77.5 sacks.

The Pittsburgh Steelers may have gotten crushed by the San Francisco 49ers back in Week 1 to start the season, but that was no fault of T.J. Watt, who recorded three sacks and a tackle for loss in a stunning return debut from injury.

NFL Defensive Player of the Year Predictions: Who Will Win in 2023-24?

Now that we’ve gone through some of the NFL Defensive Player of the Year favorites, let’s finally get into our NFL Defensive Player of the Year predictions. For our best bet, we’re targeting a player we broke down in the NFL Defensive Player of the Year candidates for 2023-24 above.

T.J. Watt (+380 at DraftKings) was able to remain one of the NFL Defensive Player of the Year favorites last season despite missing significant time, so a healthy Watt has the potential to win repeat awards, just like his older brother. He immediately impacted the game in Week 1, sacking Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals, but he suffered an injury.

He wouldn’t return until over two months later, but in the last half of the season, he helped the Steelers go 7-2 down the stretch. While they still missed the playoffs, that allowed them to go 9-8 on the year, extending head coach Mike Tomlin’s streak to 15 years of having a winning season.

Watt has already made headlines wreaking havoc on the 49ers, Brock Purdy and their touted offensive line in a Week 1 loss, and will have the opportunity to make headlines facing Burrow and Jackson in marquee divisional matchups, which is always important to remember when making NFL Defensive Player of the Year predictions.

While that’s our top NFL Defensive Player of the Year betting pick, we also have a longshot candidate to target for the current NFL Defensive Player of the Year odds for 2023-24.

NFL Defensive Player of the Year 2023-24: Longshot Candidates to Watch

He's now been taken off the board, but entering the season, the odds to win NFL Defensive Player of the Year provide us with names from all over the league, and we were focused on Quinnen Williams (+20000 at DraftKings) of the New York Jets. As we’ve mentioned already when breaking down the NFL Defensive Player of the Year favorites, the ability to rush the passer in today’s league is key.

The big man out of Alabama has only been in the NFL for four seasons but has already proven to be in high demand. Following a contract dispute, the Jets were able to lock him back up with a four-year deal averaging roughly $25 million per year.

He seems well worth the money, as he’s the type of defensive tackle that can soak up blocks for his teammates. While that has a great impact, stats and big plays are required to win something like the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award. That’s where Williams stands out. Despite being a big man in the middle, he was still able to record an incredible 12 sacks last season.

Like Watt, he’s in a division with a potential MVP-winning QB in Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills. He already had a big moment in the Jets' Week 1 surprise victory over those Bills despite losing Aaron Rodgers for the season. Williams was the most dominant force on either front seven in the game, recording nine solo tackles, including one for a loss of yards. Continuing to have big moments in these types of games could go a long way, so we love making Williams the longshot option of our NFL Defensive Player of the Year predictions for 2023-24.

How is the NFL Defensive Player of the Year Decided?

Like the majority of other awards, the NFL Defensive Player of the Year is decided by the Associated Press (AP). That abbreviation is often seen in the media for awards, rankings and other aspects that involve voting.

That is effectively a group of sportswriters, and for the NFL Defensive Player of the Year, there is a panel of 50 AP sportswriters that ultimately decide which of the NFL Defensive Player of the Year candidates win the award.

As we’ve stated a couple of times now, the NFL Defensive Player of the Year odds are focused on players possessing the ability to rush the passer. Rules changes have led the NFL to become a much more pass-happy league, so it’s arguably the most important position aside from QBs themselves.

However, that hasn’t always been the case. The trend we’ve seen has been primarily pass rushers in the last 10 years or so, but prior to that, linebackers were much more prominent. While we still see some listed today, those are more technical terms than anything, as they’re still guys who primarily rush the passer.

Speaking of how things used to be, Pittsburgh used to be home of the Steel Curtain defense, so it’s no surprise that they lead the way in terms of the most players who have made NFL Defensive Player of the Year predictions come true:

Then, there are six teams tied with three players that have proven NFL Defensive Player of the Year predictions correct. On the flip side, there are also teams with no NFL Defensive Player of the Year winners, which are the following:
