2024 Minnesota state boys hockey tournament: Grand Rapids thriller wraps up Day 2

Follow the action with live updates from the Class AA quarterfinals.

Day 2 of the 2024 Minnesota state boys hockey tournament at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. is complete after a day of incredible action in the Class AA quarterfinals. 

The night ended when Grand Rapids scored the winning goal with 1.6 seconds to play in a thriller against White Bear Lake. Also moving on to Friday's semifinals are Edina, Chanhassen and Cretin-Derham Hall, which needed two overtimes to defeat Centennial.

No. 5 Grand Rapids 2 vs. No. 4 White Bear Lake 1

First period

  • Grand Rapids strikes on William Shermoen's goal at 4:04 of the first period. Thunderhawks controlling the pace so far. Grand Rapids 1, White Bear Lake 0

Second period

  • Grand Rapids maintains the 1-0 lead after two periods. 

Third period

  • White Bear Lake going on the power play with 5:33 to play and trailing 1-0. 
  • Bears come up empty on the power play and then almost immediately commit a penalty and Grand Rapids will be on the power play with 3:09 to play and still leading 1-0. 
  • It wasn't just a minor penalty on White Bear Lake, it was a five-minute boarding major. Grand Rapids will have the man advantage rest of the way. 
  • 14 seconds into the major and Grand Rapids gets called for a holding penalty and we'll lay 4-on-4 for two minutes with only 2:55 left in the game. Still 1-0. 
  • Bears tie it with 1:34 to go. The 4-on-4 goal goes to Jack Stanius. Grand Rapids 1, White Bear Lake 1
  • Stunning finish! Grand Rapids scores with 1.6 seconds left. Goal goes to Nathan Garski, Grand Rapids 2, White Bear Lake 1 

No. 1 Edina 6, Elk River/Zimmerman 2

First period

  • Top-seeded Hornets jumped on top 1-0 on a goal by Freddie Schneider just 3:20 into the game. Edina 1, Elk River/Zimmerman 0

Second period

  • Casey Vandertop scores 5:40 into the period. Edina 2, Elk River/Zimmerman 0 
  • 39 seconds later Sam Peckham made it 3-0.
  • 2 minutes, 9 seconds after that Vandertop scored again. 4-0
  • 1 minute, 55 seconds later Mason West scored. 5-0
  • A little over 3 minutes after that Vandertop completed the natural hat trick. Edina 6, Elk River/Zimmerman 0
  • Daniel Babcock gets the Elks on the board. Edina 6, Elk River/Zimmerman 1

Third period

  • Kole Mears nets one for the Elks at 14:52 of the third. Edina 6, Elk River/Zimmerman 2
  • Edina advances to Friday's semifinals and will face the winner of Grand Rapids and White Bear Lake. 

Cretin-Derham Hall 4 vs. No. 3 Centennial 3 (2OT)

First period

  • Cougars strike 56 seconds after the opening puck drop as Hunter Searles scores. Centennial 1, CDH 0
  • Nick Carls scores two power play goals just 79 seconds apart. Centennial 3, CDH 0
  • Raiders answer with 3:16 remaining on a goal by Aidan Siegfried. Centennial 3, CDH 1

Second period

  • It took until there was 56 seconds left in the second period before another goal was scored, and it came off the stick of Cretin-Derham Hall's Chuck Owens. Centennial 3, CDH 2

Third period/overtime/double overtime

  • Raiders come all the back from down three goals to tie it at 1:56 of the third period on a power play goal by Max Anderson. Centennial 3, CDH 3
  • We're going to overtime for the first time in The Tourney. 
  • The first overtime went five minutes and that didn't settle anything. They'll resurface the ice and come back out for a second overtime. 
  • It ended with 4:16 to play in the second overtime as Max Anderson won it for the Raiders. 

No. 2 Chanhassen 7, Rochester Century/John Marshall 0 (Final)

First period

  • Chanhassen appeared to strike first when Caden Lee put a puck into the net on a juicy rebound, but a video review revealed that the Storm were offsides so the goal was wiped out. 
  • Rochester didn't have a shot on goal until there was under three minutes left in the period. 
  • With 21 seconds left in the period Chanhassen got on the board when Minnesota State-Mankato recruit Jack Christ held a puck in the offense zone and fired an unassisted shot into the net. Chanhassen 1, Rochester 0

Second period

  • Storm go up 2-0 on a goal by Tyler Smith with 8:30 left in the period. Chanhassen 2, Rochester 0
  • Caden Lee makes up for the goal that was wiped out by an offsides call by speeding up the center of the rink and firing a shot in for his 25th goal of the season. Chanhassen 3, Rochester 0
  • Lee scores again on a power play. It's getting out of hand quickly. Chanhassen 4, Rochester 0

Third period

  • Storm add three more en route to a 7-0 victory. They out-shot Rochester 42-12. Chanhassen 7, Rochester 0
  • Chanhassen will play in the semifinals Friday at 6 p.m.
